The lodge was named after Camp Pomponio, which in turn was named after the nearby Pomponio Creek and Reservoir. Ponponio Lupugeyun was a Coast Miwok resistance fighter who led raids against the Spanish missions and was caught and executed by the Spanish in Monterey.
