Camp History

Location: New Dorp. Staten Island.
Size: 100 acres (initiall, later expanded to 135 acres.
Terrain: Heavily wooded.
Start Date: Acquisition announced 1/23/1949.
Name Origin: From William H. "Uncle Bill" Pouch, Scout Commissioner of the Boy Scout Foundation of Greater New York [1937-1941). Council President (1942-47) and Honory Chairman o the Greater New York Councils Executive Board.
Acquisition: By the Greater New York Councils in 1949. Ernest Flagg (1857-1947| was an architect, designer of the Singer Building on Broadway, the U.S. Naval Academy, the Corcoran Art Gallery in Washington Do, and had a suc-acre country estate called stone Court in Dongan Hills. SI.
Property Additions: On March 12, 1954, William H. Lanthom, chairman of the GNYC Camping Committee, announced that grants from the Jacob R. Schiff and Irving Berlin funds and other gifts would enable doubling the Camp Pouch property before the summer of 1954.
