While 70 made, at least one was burned 69 remaining, but 1 prototype is 70 again. Was told it was originally sold for $50 in 1981 but Ron Oslin says he designed it, had the prototype made and the first 35 were auctioned off and the remaining 35 were auctioned off slowly as the years went by. Was told that fake ones were made that have RED stamp on back while originals have BLACK stamp. But then I saw Ron Oslin's prototype and it had both black AND red on it. The red stated, "(C symbol)1981 Nawakwa Lodge Boy Scouts of America" and in black "00-70-81".
Someone told me the F2 was 2 per ordeal member in 1976 only and only one ordeal done that year and worth about $450. Joseph Klos reports it's nearly impossible to get and worth between $1,500 and $2,500. Evan Butler says he understands there's only about 80 F2's in mint condition out there, about 200 total but most of them sewn/used/washed.
S1
Because the S1 came out before the S3 which was released in 1959, and camp TBS didn't open until 1964, the S1 was likely being issued at Camp Shawondawsee which was the Richmond area Scout camp that opened in 1912, one year after Scouting was established in Richmond despite the Greater Richmond Council (later to be called the Robert E Lee Council followed by Heart of Virginia Council) was established in 1913. An older arrowman, Thomas Smith, confirmed to me that he did his OA ordeal at Camp Shawondassee as a child with Nawakwa so it WAS going on there. Because the lodge began in 1919 but the S3 didn't come out until 1959 it could have been sold for 40 years. As I understand it, flaps didn't start coming out until the 50's and even Totem Pins were the 40's and 50's. So, likely this flap is simply from the 50's and was out around 10 years or so.
The S6 was released in 1969, camp TBS didn't open until 1964 and the S5 had been released in 1963 so the S6 was likely the first Nawakwa flap issued only at Camp TBS while preceding flaps would have been originally issued at Camp Shawondawsee which was the Richmond area Scout camp that opened in 1912, one year after Scouting was established in Richmond despite the Greater Richmond Council (later to be called the Robert E Lee Council followed by Heart of Virginia Council) was established in 1913.
Steve Jackson reports he designed this flap and was in the lodge in the mid to late 70's and served as the Vice Chief for one year. This is the first flap where the Cardinal and dogwood appear in Nawakwa issues. Steven stated the blue color was of no specific significance, they just wanted something different for the sixtieth anniversary to separate from the previous flaps. They wanted it to be VA themed so they chose the state bird and state tree.
S16a
Lighter Green Nawakwa letters is the most distinguishing feature of the S16a. The 3 doesn't always lean forward, RWB feathers are not always long and skinny. The S16b (not this one) has Darker Green (LGN) Nawakwa letters. You will NOT be able to tell the difference between the S16a and S16b unless you have both of them right next to each other to compare. Without having them together it is a total guess. 2nd, $45 Evan Butler. 3rd, $45 Evan Butler. These are incredibly hard to find. They're similar to the S66A and S78A. They're just a variation which can be hard to find. Because they're a variation, Nawakwa likely made 200+ of them and while difficult to find should not be regarded as flaps such as the Wayfinder or 2015 NOAC B&W which are likely in the 50 only range. As such I believe they are worth around $300 but not $2,000. Because I only have two, these are very hard to find, I'm electing NOT to put one in my trading binder. The second one is in the boxes.
Wayfinder. Reportedly 100 of these, but there may only be 50. The S174 was given to all Nawakwa attendees of the 2018 NOAC who attended the specific Wayfinder event. Carl Whitaker says he was there and each Nawakwa attendee was given two of these. There are supposed to be 100 in existence but many speculate only 25 people attended that year which would mean there are likely only 50 in existence and the other 50 were either destroyed or locked away in the Nawakwa vault-which is rumored to exist. NOAC limits the amount of adults who can attend to maximum the amount of youth who attend. So, if Nawakwa can only get 12 boys to go then max 12 adults can go so that is how limits can be reached quickly. Evan Butler told me he got one from someone who went to the 2018 NOAC and that guy said he was given three, not two, when he attended. So say they got two and some three. Perhaps the one with three traded for one while at NOAC.
300 made? Patchscan states 500 made, but PatchVault originally stated only 300 made until I pointed out the PatchScan result. It seems like PatchScan has lumped the S204 and S205 together and just says both are 500 because the S205 is or would it say 800 made if it had lumped them together or is it actually 250 each?
